The Staithes Museum

Tucked away just a stone’s throw from the harbour, Staithes Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the village’s rich history. It holds a fascinating collection of photographs, objects, and stories relating to Staithes’ fishing and village life, from the days of sail through to the 20th century.

It also celebrates Captain Cook’s connection to Staithes, and the important role the village played in shaping his early ambitions before he went on to explore the wider world.

The Staithes Museum is an independent, volunteer-run museum with free admission. However, donations are very welcome and go directly towards the care of our collection and keeping the museum open for everyone to enjoy.

Dogs are welcome, and our volunteers are happy to answer any questions you have about the museum and the village. 

As well as our exhibits, visitors can browse our carefully curated craft and gift shops. We host a group of 18 local crafters and makers, who sell handmade items and help to support the museum as well. 

For those who like a challenge, we offer quizzes for both adults and children! They’re a fun way to explore the museum and see who can spot all the hidden details in our displays.

Staithes Museum is a real labour of love, and we’re proud to share the village’s story with visitors of all ages.
