Staithes and Runswick Lifeboat Station RNLI station was established in 1875, the station has faced closures and reopenings due to the decline in the fishing industry and the availability of crew members. Despite these challenges, the station has remained a beacon of hope and safety, earning nine awards for gallantry over the years.
History
The history of Staithes Lifeboat Station is as rich as it is eventful.
The RNLI had initially wished to station a lifeboat in Staithes by 1870 but struggled to find a suitable location.
In 1874, a generous donation and a benefactor’s will stipulating that a lifeboat be stationed here allowed the plans to proceed. The crew used an old alum warehouse as a temporary lifeboat house until the official RNLI building was constructed in 1875. This lifeboat house, adapted in 1910, is now grade II listed and serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of our community.
Staithes Lifeboat Station operated side by side with Runswick Bay Lifeboat Station, which was established in 1866. However, a decline in the fishing fleet and a lack of crew members led to the closure of the Staithes station in 1922. The station reopened in 1928 after the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries installed a harbour and breakwaters, creating a resurgence in fishing from Staithes. Unfortunately, this resurgence was short-lived, and the station closed again in 1938.
In January 1978, Staithes was used as a testbed for the new Atlantic 21-class lifeboats. Following successful trials, it was decided to reopen the station. The station officially reopened on 17 June 1978, with Runswick Bay closing on 30 June 1978. The Staithes lifeboat has been operational since April 1978, occupying the same station that was built in 1875.
A unique feature of the Staithes Lifeboat Station is its location on a stretch of land known as the “Cowbar.” The slipway curves gently towards the bay, allowing the lifeboat to be launched by a tractor. This practical design ensures that the lifeboat can be swiftly and safely launched, even in challenging conditions.
Staithes Lifeboat Station is not only operationally significant but also a focal point of community spirit. The station hosts an annual Lifeboat Weekend, featuring a nightgown parade, fireworks, and sea demonstrations, attracting over 2,000 attendees.
Additionally, a yearly auction at the Cod and Lobster public house raises funds for the lifeboat, with the 2023 auction raising £6,050 for the Staithes and Runswick RNLI lifeboat.
